Choosing the right keg coupler: a guide to global keg standards

August 6, 2026

Keg couplers connect your dispense system to the keg, and the right type depends on the keg valve — which varies by brewery and region. Fit the wrong coupler and the keg simply won’t tap.

The common standards

  • D-System (American Sankey) — most US domestic brands.
  • S-System (European Sankey) — many European lagers and ales.
  • A-System (German slider) — traditional German breweries.
  • G-System — some UK and European brands.
  • U-System (Grundy) — older UK stouts and ales.

How to choose

Match the coupler to the keg valve, check the inlet/outlet threads for your gas and beer lines, and consider whether you need a probe with or without a pressure-relief valve. When in doubt, tell us the brands you pour and we’ll spec the couplers for you.
